The scenic and emotional excitement of the Florida landscape is for me, one
of the most satisfying aspects of landscape painting. I have painted the landscape
en plein aire in oils over much of the United States and I continue to come
back time and again to the singular beauty of the Florida scene.
I think it was when I lived in Cocoa Beach that I first fell in love with
the Florida landscape. Early every morning I would walk the beach just north
of Patrick’s Air Force base. As the sun rose over the horizon it would
cast long shadows across the wide beach and create patterns on the creeping
surf. Some days the waves would rage against the land, and the spray and ferocity
of the water would be utterly captivating. Across the Indian River on Merritt
Island I would wander through old orange groves that had returned to jungle
and paint Palmetto and orphaned Royal palms. To someone who had spent most
of their life in the city, this was an artistic epiphany and to this day it
remains so.
